Some folks want that show home glittz and others just want to be surrounded by their art, carefully curated, from a lifetime of collecting.

“We’ve got some glass art we’d like to display on some floating shelves” was the unassuming initial brief. It wasn’t until the first visit I got the measure of what I was in for. Not just any glass but a collection of works by @hollygraceartist and #robertwynneglass and there was lots of it. The house had already been furnished by WA furniture legends Brooker just to add to the pressure of what was turning into a fairly nerve racking design job. With a couple of timber desks, coffee tables and lounges in the room already, surely there was enough timber already and we should look at some other materials for the shelves?

“Nope” was the reply “ More wood and different types of wood and contrasting woods… Oh and joinery, lots and lots of joinery.” My kind of people.

It’s hard to spend any time with Holly’s work and not have it rub off on you. The arcing branches of her snow gum series and the tapered curves of glass leaves all informed the design of the shelf supports stitched into the Blackbutt shelves with wedged tenons. Light modules in custom 3D printed housings allowed the light to be put exactly where it was needed and balance struck between internal light and back lights.

Many thanks to the clients for being all round wonderful people and for the pics.
